Cosart General Info

Cosart (generic name: losartan potassium; brand names include: Cosart / Los-Pot) belongs to a new group of medicines, called angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

Cosart is the only medicine in its class proven to lower the chance of stroke.

Cosart is used:

alone or with other blood pressure medicines to lower high blood pressure (hypertension);
to lower the chance of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and a heart problem called left ventricular hypertrophy;
to slow the worsening of diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy) in patients with type 2 diabetes who have or had high blood pressure.

In type 2 diabetic patients with protein in the urine, Cosart has been shown to reduce the need for dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Cosart is not addictive.

Cosart Recommendations

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Cosart exactly as directed.

Cosart is generally taken once daily.

Take Cosart at about the same time each day. Taking your tablet(s) at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take the tablets.

Swallow Cosart with a glass of water or other liquid. It does not matter whether you take Cosart before or after food.

Continue taking Cosart for as long as your doctor prescribes.

If you miss a dose of Cosart, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Just take the next dose at your regular time.

Keep Cosart at room temperature. Protect from light.

Cosart Precautions

Before taking Cosart, tell your doctor if:

you are allergic to any medicines;
you have kidney or liver disease;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
